SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY

When can I return to work?
You may be able to return to sedentary job 2-4 weeks following surgery. A job requiring overhead activity you may not be able to return to work for 3-6 months. 

Will I need assistance at home following surgery?
No. 

Will I need physical therapy?
You will require physical therapy for 4 weeks, 2-3 times a week.

When can I return to overhead activity?
You will be able to return to full overhead activity 2 months following surgery with the assistance of physical therapy.

What can I do to prepare for recovery?
We recommend 2 weeks of physical therapy prior to your shoulder arthroscopy to strengthen your surrounding muscles. 

What are the risks and complications for rotator cuff repair?
The risks involved with shoulder arthroscopy are uncommon but can occur include injuries to the nerves and blood vessels, loss of motion to the shoulder, stiffness to the shoulder, pulmonary embolism, thrombophlebitis, fracture, and possible need for future surgery.

Is it normal to have numbness around my shoulder following surgery?
You may experience some numbness on the outside of your shoulder, this occurs when making the incision damaging nerves. This usually goes away with time.

When can I shower/bath following my rotator cuff repair?
Avoid showering or bathing until your incision is completely dry.

How long is my surgery?
Your time in the operating room varies between 60-90 minutes followed by some time in the recovery room.

What should I bring to the hospital?
Comfortable loose fitting clothing which allows easy access to your shoulder. 

When can I resume taking all of my medications following rotator cuff repair?
You may resume all of your medications upon discharge from the hospital unless indicated otherwise by your doctor.

How long will I wear an arm sling following surgery?
An arm sling is to be worn 2-4 weeks following surgery depending on what is performed during surgery.
